Connected
3 September to 3 October 2010
It is with great pleasure that the Mundaring Arts Centre invites you to the opening of Connected and Shapes Beneath the Surface on Friday 3 September, from 7pm.
To be opened by internationally renowned ceramist Sandra Black.
The three dimensional artists that form the Clay Feet group of ceramists will transform the Main Gallery space into a feast of surface, texture, pattern and form. With sculptural ceramics by six emerging and established female artists, Connected showcases each artist’s different approach to clay practice. Opening night refreshments are kindly supplied by Due Jolly Winery.
Connected is the 15th group exhibition since Clay Feet began in 2001, celebrating their shared aspiration to create opportunities for emerging artists to exhibit in traditional and non-traditional spaces and to raise awareness of the richness of contemporary ceramic art practice.
“We come from all walks and stages of life, with several of us involved in educational centre's as students, teachers and technicians. Our work is as diverse as our backgrounds, and due to the artists varying expressions, our exhibitions display a wonderfully diverse range of fresh and vibrant work.”
Connected brings together works by Clay Feet members Jillian Archibald, Elaine Bradley, Pauline Mann, Narda McMahon, Gillian Treichel and Andrea Vinkovic.
Shapes Beneath the Surface
Artist in focus Anne Ryan
In the Community Room
Shapes Beneath the Surface reveals a series of new work in an installation by ceramist Anne Ryan. Anne’s exploration of surface through ceramics is inspired by the ancient rock formations and unique life forms found along the south-west coast. Using found objects, including man-made materials, Anne creates the texture on the exterior of her work, which then dictates the form and shape of each piece. Created from a combination of paper clay or raku clay, her finished works are “washed” with oxides to highlight texture and fired at a very high temperature.
Connected and Shapes Beneath the Surface are supported by a public programme of workshops and demonstrations funded through the Shire of Mundaring, Healthway Drug Aware and the Department of Culture and the Arts.
